12 Step Counselling is underpinned by a structured framework originating from Alcoholics Anonymous. This approach can be adapted to the individual’s needs but has proved especially effective when talking therapy is combined with the client attending meetings and answering step work questions in writing in between sessions.
I suggest this type of counselling for people who experience cravings, (food, alcohol, sex, etc…), mental obsessions, compulsive behaviours and are struggling with addictions.
This therapeutic process is founded on spiritual principles and can be beneficial for both clients who have never heard of 12 Step programs and for people who are in recovery and working the steps with a sponsor. Clients have found this approach very supportive in helping them with processing and working through underlying traumas that fuelled their addictive cycles.
